How does Search Engine Optimization Work?
Crawler-based search engines have some major elements. First is
the spider, also called the crawler. The spider visits a web page,
reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the site.
This is what it means when someone refers to a site being "spidered" or "crawled." The
spider returns to the site on a regular basis, such as every month
or two, to look for changes.
Everything the spider finds goes into the second part of the search
engine, the index. The index, sometimes called the catalog, is
like a giant book containing a copy of every web page that the
spider finds. If a web page changes, then this book is updated
with new information.
Sometimes it can take a while for new pages or changes that the
spider finds to be added to the index. Thus, a web page may have
been "spidered" but not yet "indexed." Until
it is indexed -- added to the index -- it is not available to those
searching with the search engine.
By creating your site with SEO in mind, it makes it easier for
the spiders to crawl your site and ensure you are in the top of
the results.
How long does it take to move up in rankings?
If your site has already been on the Web for some time, and is
already listed in all of the major directories, then you will probably
begin to see improvements in your search engine rankings within
4-6 weeks.
If your site is not listed in the major engines and directories,
then taking the time to submit it will have a significant positive
impact on your rankings.
A complete revamping of your website using search engine optimization
techniques will result in an improvement in your search engine
rankings fast. You should expect to see improvements for six to
nine months, as the changes to your site are added throughout the
databases that drive the major search engines.
Does it make sense to have a full flash website?
For the greatest optimization, your site should not be in full
flash. Search engine crawlers hate flash and are partially blind
to it. You should use Flash sparingly and create a mirror HTML
website for SEO purposes.
What is Link Popularity and does it work?
Link Popularity refers to the number of sites that link to your
web pages from various search engines such as Google, MSN, HotBot,
etc. Many search engines use Link Popularity as a factor for determining
page rank.
What
are Landing Pages?
Every page of a site that is indexed
by search engines, ranks for any term and drives organic traffic
to the site from search engine result pages is in essence a landing
page. In active SEO this process is not left to chance. The content
on the page and/or links to the page are geared and optimized
for very specific keyword phrases that were researched prior
the optimization campaign. Keywords that are of most interest
for organic search engine optimization campaigns are relevant
to the products or services offered by the site, are used by
targeted audience in search engines to find products and services
like the ones offered by the optimized site and yield a high
Return On Investment (ROI).
A
different approach to Landing Pages optimized for organic search
traffic are pages that are not intended and optimized to convert
a visitor directly. The page is optimized for more generic and
less targeted keyword phrases that have naturally a lower conversion
than more specific search terms that express the intent of the
searcher in more detail. Those pages are intended to serve as a
Hub or "mini portal" within a site. This makes especially
sense for larger websites that cover a number of different topics.
A single Homepage can not be optimized for every topic and become
relevant to all of them. The above mentioned type of landing pages
can be used to solve this dilemma. The site virtually establishes
a number of home pages, each for a broader topic covered by the
site.
Will I have to change my content to optimize my website?
Yes. Most likely, you will have to add new content so that the
spiders are better able to crawl your website. Your pages must
be linked to one another as well.
